Another Lettie G. Howard Update and Another Weekend Update

The 100×100 campaign for Schooner Lettie G. Howard is charging forward! Check the thermometer to your right, and you’ll see that we have broken $10,000 and are headed toward the $12,000 that will be matched by anonymous donors. Be sure to note Save Our Seaport on your donation, so it will be matched!

Matching grants mean that when we pass $11,999 we go straight to $24,000. How cool is that?

And of course, we’re not stopping there. Lettie needs more than that.

Saturday’s volunteer day will be a busy one, with two locations in operation again. Here’s the news as emailed out by Beth Childs:

Hi Volunteers!

We are in full Spring cleaning mode, making all our vessels even more beautiful! We need you all to come and have fun getting sweaty and dirty as we accomplish ship-shape-ness.  Well, okay, that isn’t really a word, but you get my drift.  Below is the “weekly word” from Jay about Saturday’s activities. PLEASE let me know WHERE you will be volunteering.  It really helps us plan.  I send your responses to our captains at 4:30 on Friday, so I need to know by that time, please.

“Busy as usual here on the waterfront, and Saturday we’ll continue with that theme by making preparations for Pioneer’s return from the shipyard sometime next week. We’ll also be spending time on the Ambrose with projects both new and ongoing.

For those of you heading to Tottenville to continue the amazing amount of work happening on Pioneer in the shipyard, Richard is requesting yoghurt containers and plastic take-out dishes with covers, if available. The work done this weekend will help set us up to step Pioneer’s masts next week. Her new transmission has been installed, as well as the new foredeck hatch, and the painting continues!

Looking forward to seeing you all!  Hope you’re all having a great week,

Jay Amster”

Thanks Everyone!

As on other recent weekends, there is a bonus volunteer opportunity: Sunday with the Harbor School on their vessels at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. 10am-5pm, free parking, Seaport pickups possible. Please RSVP to Mike Abegg at (347)6-PIER16 or mabegg@newyorkharborschool.org

This Weekend and Beyond

Here is the Saturday scoop from Beth:

Hi Volunteers, Here is the agenda for Saturday from Jay:

“Things are happening and it’s beautiful outside!

This weekend, as with last weekend, we’ll continue to divide and conquer, with projects here at the museum as well as in the shipyard on Pioneer.  Ambrose continues to be our focal point, with other waterfront projects popping up here and there as we continue to look to forward to the departure of Marion M, Helen McAllister and the car float.

Richard reports that there’s plenty still to be done on Pioneer, and that things have been going quite well with the many and varied projects that are being undertaken. For those of you making the trip to the yard, Richard has requested rags and plastic containers for painting.

As we move forward with yard and into the Pioneer sailing season, we will continue to have projects ongoing here on the waterfront, and would love for all of you to continue to come down on Saturdays.

As always, thanks for everything you’ve all done and will do – we really couldn’t continue to operate without you all.  PLEASE, PLEASE try to RSVP by 3:00 tomorrow – FRIDAY – AND BE SURE TO LET US KNOW WHERE YOU INTEND TO BE!  It really helps us plan out the day.

See you on Saturday,
Jay”

And, thanks from me, too!!

If you have any energy left after Saturday, Harbor School will have students out at the Navy Yard on Sunday, and needs volunteers! 10am-5pm. Call (347)6-PIER16 for details and info about pickups/rides.

You guys are really knocking it out of the park with donations for Schooner Lettie G. Howard (see the thermometer at upper right). Please keep the momentum up! Donations through SOS are still being matched by anonymous donors!

We have scheduled our next meeting for April 17th, to follow the Community Board 1 Seaport Committee meeting at the Seaport. Location to be confirmed, but please plan to come.

And yes, despite the Pioneer to Tottenville photos in this post, we know we still owe you Ambrose return photos. Coming soon!

Lettie G. Howard Matching Grant Enhanced, plus This Weekend’s Volunteer Opportunities

1. We’ll start with the most exciting news: a second anonymous donor has stepped forward and raised the matching grant for the Lettie G. Howard 100×100* Fund to $12,000.

(*Can we say 100×120? It loses something in translation, but the more the merrier!)

…And we’re halfway there! Check the thermometer to the right and you’ll see that we have reached $6,017 in pledges (and that will be doubled!). Please keep the donations coming, and be sure to specify that you’re donating by way of SOS so that the matching grant applies.

2. Next, we have Saturday Maintenance. Beth Childs reminds us to please RSVP, and passes on this message from Jay Amster:

“Just wanted to let you know that we’ll be focusing our efforts this Saturday on final preparations for Pioneer to go to the shipyard and preparing the Ambrose for the “South Street Seaport Springs Forward” party that’s this Monday the 12th.

Pioneer will leave this Saturday afternoon for the shipyard, and attached are some notes (scroll down) from Capt. Richard Dorfman about that, as well as directions to the shipyard.

In other news, NEXT WEEK we will run an Intro to Navigation Class.

Thanks very much,

Jay”

PDFs: Transit Details  Tottenville Directions

3. Jay beat us to our next announcement, which is that Pioneer leaves for the shipyard Saturday afternoon. See the attached notes just above for details.

4. For those who have been (or want to be) involved with Harbor School Volunteer Sundays at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, it’s the usual 10am start this Sunday. NO seaport pickups this week (Indy’s engine and Pescador are on Governors Island for maintenance), but subway pickups are possible. Call Mike Abegg at (347)6-PIER16.

5. There’s more, but we’ll save it for the upcoming Ambrose mega-post. Hint: Ambrose welcome home party this Monday, and many many Ambrose transit photos!

Volunteer Opportunities This Weekend

It’s another weekend full of opportunities for those eager to volunteer…….

Saturday: Volunteer at South Street Seaport Museum!

Volunteer Coordinator Beth Childs writes:

Greetings Volunteers!
Now that we have officially completed the warmest February in NYC on record, it’s time to warm up our hopes and expectations for a rapidly approaching 2012 Pioneer Sailing Season!  First though, we have to get through  March (coming in like a lion?), and that could include testing your foul-weather gear that has lain dormant for more than a year.  This Saturday, with its rainy forecast, could be the perfect opportunity.  On a more serious note, here is Saturday’s agenda, as set forth by Jay Amster:

“We will concentrate on making the best of what could be a wet
Saturday by painting indoors as much as possible, continuing to prep for
Pioneer yard, and various other small weather-window dependent projects.

In addition, we will also offer an informal class on square rig sailing
this Saturday for anyone who’s interested.”

As always, send me an email to let me know that you will be there!

Sunday: Volunteer with the Harbor School!

A crew of Harbor School students will report to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, volunteering to maintain the school’s vessels and facilities. Some adults are needed to help supervise and join in on the work.

Don’t worry, if you are a Seaport volunteer, you’ve got the skills needed. If you can help, give Mike Abegg a call on our info line at (347)6-PIER16.

Sunday, March 4, 10am-5pm. Free parking, seaport pickups possible.

Volunteer Opportunities All Weekend: South Street Seaport Museum, Harbor School, PortSide NewYork

Got plans this weekend? We have some suggestions…….

Saturday: Volunteer at South Street Seaport Museum!

Volunteer Coordinator Beth Childs writes:

Hi there!

The Kingston Trio might have been mind readers, or weather forecasters, when they sang “Blow ye winds in the morning, and blow ye winds hi ho.  Heave away yer runnin’ gear and Blow Boys, Blow”.  According to the talking weather heads, we are in for a big blow on Saturday.  That won’t stop anyone, will it?  All you dedicated sailors know that wind is our friend (of course, we’d rather have wind in July and August than in February, but we don’t always get to choose.)  But, we CAN choose to show up on Saturday to continue the good work!  If they could talk, both Wavertree and Pioneer would say “Thanks”.

Please send me an RSVP if you plan to show up.  And, Thanks!

Sunday, February 26, 10am-5pm. Free parking, seaport pickups possible.

Monday: Help save the Mary Whalen!

PortSide NewYork and the tanker Mary Whalen are in serious trouble, and need a new home. There will be a public meeting Monday night, the 27th, at Long Island College Hospital. All details are on this PDF. Download it and share it – and come to the meeting!
