Vote For A Worthy Partner In Preservation plus Explore The Gowanus Canal

Two quick only-slightly-off-topic announcements today:

1. American Express and The National Trust for Historic Preservation are running an initiative called Partners In Preservation. You can:

“Vote to help give away three million dollars in New York City! American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation are pleased to announce that Partners in Preservation is coming to New York City. Partners in Preservation is a community-based program which provides preservation grants for local historic places.”

From now through May 21st, you can vote once per day for one of 40 programs. The top four finishers are guaranteed their grant requests.

It might be fair to say that we have more than one horse in this race. The Tug Pegasus & Waterfront Museum Barge are long-time members of our local maritime community, and run great education programs. The Museum Of The City Of New York is operating the South Street Seaport Museum.

Both have worthy programs, and we can’t tell you which to vote for, but DO go vote! Please go to partnersinpreservation.com, log in via Facebook and/or create a PIP account, then vote every day.

2. The Harbor School is currently running programs with their students on the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, and they need a few willing hands. Teacher Ann Fraioli writes:

Hey All!

Greetings from the Harbor School!  I’m looking for volunteers to help out with my 9th grade Introduction to New York Harbor Class for our trips out to the Gowanus Canal.

When: 9:30am-3:30pm
Thursday: 5/3
Tuesday: 5/8
Wednesday: 5/9
Thursday: 5/10

Where:
Gowanus, Brooklyn
The end of 2nd Street right off of Bond St.

What:
•    First, we are looking for folks each day who have small boat-handling experience who can go out on the Gowanus with one or two students in our small prams & skiffs.
•    Second, we are looking for one person each day who can assist with the Water Quality Testing station.
•    Third, we may need folks to monitor small groups of students eating lunch.
Let me know if you’re interested!

Best,
Ann.
